Five Reasons More Pros are Turning to Mallet Putters!
Tour players were initially reluctant to embrace mallet putters, afraid they would lose the “feel” they covet, and simply because they were accustomed to blades. But as their equipment manufacturers began boasting of better results, they gave them a try. Now, a growing percentage of players on all the Tours are riding their mallets to victory. Here’s why:
1. Alignment is easier with a mallet. The single line for aim on most blades does not compare with the technologically advanced systems on mallets. Alignment is the key to good putting, and Pros want every possible advantage as they compete for glory and prize money.
2. Club weight leads to better mechanics. Mallets outweigh most blades by a significant margin. And heftier clubs help the Tour players keep the club head down, where it can make the best contact with the ball. The weight helps eliminate the bad habit some Pros suffer from of lifting the club just prior to contact, sometimes called the “yips” and well known to most amateurs!
3. The weight of the mallet head allows the professionals to focus on good mechanics while the club head does the work. Pros practice enough so that distance control becomes second nature. And a mallet creates better muscle memory than a blade. Muscle memory takes over while the Tour player is devoting their attention to reading the green and proper alignment.
4. New mallet designs are giving Pros the feel they crave. Early mallets sacrificed feel or feedback for a larger sweet spot. Tour players thrive on feel, and were reluctant to pick up an oversized club that would diminish the response they got. Today, manufacturers have taken note, and are producing mallets that deliver great feel AND a larger sweet spot. Much of the increase in response is from insert-technology in the face, smaller heads, and metals that “communicate” better up the shaft.
5. The biggest reason more Pros are choosing mallets is that you cannot argue with success! Names like Harrington, Els, Mickelson, Ochoa, and Sorenstam, just to get started, are sporting mallets on their way to big wins, including Majors. Nothing succeeds like success, and modern mallets are proving that to Pros and amateurs alike.
