Better Putting

The Mallet Revolution has been going on for some time on Tour greens and neighborhood links. If you have joined the revolution, these tips will help you drop strokes every round.

First, get the right equipment for your game. Some mallets, like the Odyssey 2-Ball series, provide a huge sweet spot that virtually eliminates the damage from off-center strikes. Others, like the Monza Itsy Bitsy Spider trade the large sweet spot for much better feel, which better players prefer. If alignment is where your game suffers, choose a mallet like the Cleveland VP 509 that is designed to overcome this weakness. Try a bunch of mallets before you select your “keeper.”

Secondly, practice like a pro. Two things are involved here. The first is practicing the right way. As they say, practice does not make perfect if you are practicing bad habits. Rather, “perfect” practice makes perfect putting. So, learn proper technique. Invest in a lesson at the course, or pick up one of the coaching DVD’s available. Learn to do it right. Then, put in the time it takes to develop the muscle memory required for every task.

The third tip involves alignment. It will be no surprise to you that misaligned putts have little chance of finding the hole. So, once you have chosen your stick, and know correct technique, work on alignment. Place a tee in the ground 2 feet away from you. Hit it 20 times in a row before you allow yourself to quit. Then move it to 4 feet, and do the same. How far out you go depends on how hard you want to work at perfecting your game. This type of “target practice” will benefit your efforts around the hole as nothing else will.
Fourthly, work on your pendulum motion by holding the club correctly and keeping the proper shape in your arms and shoulders. Drive a tee in level with the ground, where the center of the ball would be. Then, rhythmically swing back and forth so that your alignment guide goes right over the ball every time. Do this for 2-3 minutes, and build up time as your strength increases. Focus on good pace in the motion. Swing with the motion you would use on a 6-footer.

Finally, build the confidence which is the core of all good golf. Finish your routine on the practice green by making 10 4-footers in a row, followed by 8 6-footers, then 2 8-footers, or whatever pushes you while still being achievable. After the last putt falls, pump your fist and walk off the green with confidence. It will carry over when it really matters!
